Understanding Enterprise-to-Cloud Migration Costs and Risks

Speaker:

Mamoon Yunus

CTO, Forum Systems
Crosscheck Networks

Track: Enterprise-Level Cloud Computing & Virtualization

Migrating to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is an attractive option for corporations that want to shift from a capital expense to a pay-as-you go model. Regardless of the business driver for cloud computing, of which there are many including reducing costs and adding nimbleness, large enterprises are now faced with re-evaluating their core IT assets with an eye towards enterprise-to-cloud migration for improving business efficiencies. However, beyond qualitatively appreciating the benefits of cloud computing, IT executives lack the ability to quantitatively assess the risk-reward structure of which application should be migrated from the enterprise to a cloud. Without having a quantifiable impact assessment of migrating enterprise resources to a cloud, enterprises are faced with ad-hoc decisions during their cloud migration process.

APIs: the Glue of Cloud Computing

Speaker:

Steven Willmott

Co-Founder & CEO
3Scale

Track: Cloud Security, Storage & Standards

Picking the right Glue and how not to come unstuck

Cloud computing has rapidly moved beyond the idea of "infrastructure on demand" to encompass a much broader idea of moving data and functionality from private closed systems to shared infrastructures. This change creates huge new opportunities for companies to reinvent the way their data and services can be used by providing accessible APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) directly into their core systems.

In this talk we'll cover how APIs are transforming business in areas such as media content, ecommerce and business services as well as how the right technical underpinnings to public APIs can make all the difference between success and failure. We'll cover plenty of real life examples from 3scale's experience in the API infrastructure business.

Industry Discussion Panel moderated by Jeremy Geelan, Cloud Expo Conference Chair

All the main buzzwords that have been making the rounds over past few years - ASP, SaaS, SOA, Virtualization, Grid Computing, Enterprise 2.0, etc. - have somehow been transmogrified into the single term "Cloud Computing."

We all know how Amazon took the lead in introducing AWS (Amazon Web Services) way back in 2003, then brought in Storage as a Service concept via S3 (Simple Shared Storage). It also introduced EC2 (Elastic Computing Cloud), where Infrastructure as a Service became viable. But what about the other 249 players in the fast-emerging Cloud ecosystem? What are their specialties? What are the newcomers offering? And what about older vendors like IBM? How do the “pure cloud” vendors like Google, Amazon, and SalesForce.com differ from everyone else? Who's doing what? How's it all going? What are the lingering unresolved issues - and who is working on solving them? Above all, this being the final session of an intense two-day program of content: Where's It All Headed???

Moderated by Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan

Cloud Standards: Enabling Interoperability and Package Delivery

    Speaker:

    Diego Parrilla

    VP of Product Management
    Abiquo

Track: Cloud Security, Storage & Standards

A combination of interoperability and portability is the Holy Grail of Cloud computing, but is nearly impossible to achieve without standards. Adopting standards fosters competition and innovation in any market, but the Cloud computing market is held back because standards, especially hypervisor formats, are not universally used.

This session will discuss Cloud computing standards, emphasizing how interoperability and package delivery is possible using the Open Virtualization Format (OVF). OVF is an open, secure, portable, efficient and extensible format for the packaging and distribution of software to be run in virtual machines. Abiquo applies OVF to effectively manage multiple datacenters in one platform, making it possible to define and replicate deployments in different infrastructures. OVF makes vendor to vendor conversions quick and easy.

    From Air To Access Cloud

    Speaker:

    Leo Yi

Project Manager & Sr. Software Engineer
    Intel China Research Center

Track: Cloud Bootcamp Europe / CloudCamp @ Cloud Expo Europe

This session will presents a solution being worked on by Intel in its China Research Center, called "From Air to Access Cloud." It is a solution aimed at making a whole enterprise IT domain as a service, provided by WIMAX operators. The domain thus provided contains private network and all subscribed services.

The key value to the enterprise is that enterprise users can access the services from anywhere covered by the operator’s WIMAX without needing to use a VPN, and access also becomes possible to different SaaS services with Single Sign On. Leo Yi wil show how, in order to prove this concept, Intel uses Tashi and Xen to build an IaaS cloud to generate virtual WIMAX CSNs. The enterprise users access the services via WIMAX ASNs.

General Session: Eliminate Vendor Lock-in with Next-Generation Virtualization Management

    Speaker:

    Pete Malcolm

    CEO
    Abiquo

    Track: All Tracks

Virtualization is one of the key foundations of the Cloud, but many enterprises are finding the rapid growth in the number of virtual machines extremely difficult to manage. Far from reducing provisioning times and improving utilization, many organizations have found that “virtualization sprawl” has reduced the effectiveness of their IT infrastructure teams, and failed to make anticipated cost savings. Furthermore, vendor lock-in has resulted in the artificially high expense of maintaining virtualized environments. Join Pete Malcolm, CEO Abiquo, to learn how next generation virtualization management can completely eliminate vendor lock-in, substantially reduce provisioning times, realize utilization goals and ultimately achieve the cost savings promised by the virtualization ideal.

General Session: Maintaining Application Visibility and Control in the Clouds

    Speaker:

    Richard Stone

Sr. Solutions Manager, Cloud Computing & Mobile
    Compuware

    Track: All Tracks

Cloud Computing is driving a fundamental shift in the way organizations build, deploy and use applications, and it’s raising expectations on how quickly and cost-effectively new IT functionality can be made available to the business. And even though the delivery chain for these “borderless applications” now crosses organizational and geographic boundaries, users will still expect the applications to perform well, and they will hold IT accountable if they don’t. For its part, IT is faced with managing an increasingly complex and diverse delivery chain, consisting of maybe dozens of service and content providers spread around the world.

The challenge for IT is to meet the business expectation of faster delivery of new functionality, while at the same time maintaining end-to-end visibility and control of application performance and availability across an inter-dependent, but independent, network of service providers.

In this session, Compuware will provide some real-world insight into how companies are successfully addressing this challenge, including details of how they can get objective, real-time data on the performance and availability of their prospective cloud service providers to assist them in their decision-making process.”

Hosting your Applications in a Cloud

    Speaker:

    Michael A. Salsburg

Chief Architect for Real Time Infrastructures & Cloud Computing
    Unisys

Track: Enterprise-Level Cloud Computing & Virtualization

This presentation will discuss a critical question that arises when considering hosting applications in the cloud. What are the attributes that attract applications to public clouds? Why implement private clouds? When is it appropriate to use both in a Hybrid Cloud approach? Can legacy applications be moved unchanged to the cloud or do they have to be re-written as Web 2.0 apps? What are the implications regarding the application data migration? How will latency change when applications are moved to the cloud? What about Identity and Access Management? How will data be secured between cloud tenants? If you are considering migrating your applications to the cloud, you will be interested in these and other issues.

Keeping Your Options Open, Even if the Cloud is Not

    Speaker:

    Doug Tidwell

Sr. Software Engineer & Cloud Evangelist
    IBM

Track: Cloud Security, Storage & Standards

As you move your data and applications into the cloud, how do you avoid being locked in to a proprietary API or service? And how do you write applications that work with multiple clouds? In this session we’ll show you how to make your cloud applications as open and vendor-independent as possible. We’ll start with some design patterns, then look at a couple of open-source projects that are keeping the cloud open.

Most cloud services require application developers to think about arcane details instead of business logic. Simple Cloud and Apache libcloud simplify development for the cloud, letting programmers focus on what matters. An open-source project sponsored by Zend, GoGrid, IBM, Microsoft, Nirvanix and Rackspace, Simple Cloud lets you write one application that uses storage, database and queue services from multiple cloud vendors, despite the differences in their APIs. We'll also take a look at Apache libcloud, an open-source project that works with VM images and instances from many cloud providers. This session will show you how to write elegant, flexible, business-oriented code that insulates your application from the vendor-specific APIs and wire formats underneath.

Cloud computing is possible because of the virtualization and commoditization of IT infrastructures; to make the most of it, we’ll need the right level of standardization as well.

There seems to be little doubt that lightweight infrastructure is The Shape of Things to Come, for enterprise IT? When, though? Are we talking 2011 or more like 2020, for major enterprises anyway?

Should mid-sized firms also outsource IT to the cloud, or only larger ones? What real-world use cases come most immediately to mind, of companies that have successfully used the Cloud to accelerate speed to value?

It's not much good claiming the Cloud is all-powerful unless you can do load testing and measure performance: how do companies in the Cloud era keep track of performance? How does the Cloud alters the risk and compliance profile for companies?

It has been said that the three main barriers preventing some CIOs from moving some of their on-premise computing to the Cloud are Security, security, security. Has that changed, now that we're into the third year (at least!) of The Cloud?

Before choosing any vendor, questions certainly abound, such as: How does the vendor plan on securing your data and segregating the data from other customers? Is the data encrypted both in motion and at rest and what key management policies do they employ? What access control do they enforce for the application and physical security? What third-party groups audit their security? What compliance or other certifications do they possess? What is their disaster recovery plan and how does data security figure into those plans? What visibility do you have into the process? What is their network topology? Are they consistent with best practice tiered networking?

So...in 2010 how secure is Cloud Computing?

Private Clouds for Developers: Make Your Infrastructure Agile

    Speaker:

    Diego Parrilla

    VP of Product Management
    Abiquo

    Track: Hot Topics

Traditionally, infrastructure resources have been at the mercy of the IT System Administrator. Development teams using Agile Development Methodologies are made rigid by this dated and inefficient system.

“What if” scenarios are generally never attempted because the upfront cost of IT resources needed to reallocate the necessary infrastructure is too high. Unfortunately, Agile development efforts often fail because the development team does not control the management and deployment of the artifacts they develop. This session will discuss how to reduce dependence on IT for day-to-day operations, eliminate waste and boost productivity in the process. Abiquo enables this by giving management teams hands-on control of resource allocation without risking damage to any virtual machine. Infrastructure changes are made easily and instantly by anyone with administrator capabilities and do not affect other teams’ resources.

Unlock the Cloud: Building a Vendor-Independent Private Cloud

    Speaker:

    Diego Parrilla

    VP of Product Management
    Abiquo

Track: Enterprise-Level Cloud Computing & Virtualization

Welcome to the end of vendor lock-in. Cloud computing is often heralded as being the best way for organizations to increase flexibility and improve efficiency.

However, that flexibility is greatly diminished by the proprietary nature of Cloud computing platforms where hypervisor formats are fixed, allowing almost no chance of interoperability or portability. As a result, teams must use the same hypervisor even if their needs change or they would prefer a different one that better suits their project. A company like Abiquo overcomes vendor lock-in by supporting and managing multiple hypervisors in the same Private Cloud, allowing users to choose any hypervisor and easily port their virtual machines - if and when - their needs change. We will discuss the benefits of vendor neutrality and how to make sure your organization accesses all of the benefits Cloud computing can provide.

Sharding the Cloud: Using Sharded Databases for High Performance and Scalable Data

    Speaker:

    Michael Heydt

    Sr. Manager, Advanced Technologies
    SunGard Consulting Services

    Track: Hot Topics

As databases grow in size, performance tends to decrease due to bottlenecks in CPU, memory and disk. One technique to solve this problem is to horizontally distribute data across multiple servers, building a shared-nothing topology with data "sharded" across the systems. Cloud services offer unique capabilities for sharded databases by offering virtually unlimited scalability. This session will focus on lessons learned in using cloud services to create sharded cloud databases, techniques for accessing the databases through web services, data sharding strategies, data evolution, adding shards to the system, and techniques of executing high-performance parallel queries across distributed data sets.

In the old world of IT, if you didn't have hardware capacity or the budget to buy more, your project was dead in the water. Budget constraints can leave some of the best, most creative and most ingenious innovations on the cutting room floor. It's a true dilemma for developers and innovators – why spend the time creating, when a project could be abandoned in a blink? That was the old world. In the new world of IT, developers rule. They have access to resources they can spin up instantly. A hybrid cloud ignites innovation and empowers developers to focus on what they need. A hybrid cloud blends the best of all worlds, public cloud, private cloud and dedicated servers to fit the needs of developers and offer the ideal environment for each app and workload without the constraints of a one-size-fits-all cloud.

IT organizations face a growing demand for faster innovation and new applications to support emerging opportunities in social, mobile, growth markets, Big Data analytics, mergers and acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and more. This is great news because it shows that IT continues to be a key stakeholder in delivering business service innovation. However, it also means that IT must deliver new innovation despite flat budgets, while maintaining existing services that grow more complex every day.
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud computing that still exist today.

What do you get when you combine Big Data technologies….like Pig and Hive? A flying pig? No, you get a “Logical Data Warehouse.” In 2012, Infochimps (now CSC) leveraged its early use of stream processing, NoSQLs, and Hadoop to create a design pattern which combined real-time, ad-hoc, and batch analytics. This concept of combining the best-in-breed Big Data technologies will continue to advance across the industry until the entire legacy (and proprietary) data infrastructure stack will be replaced with a new (and open) one.
While unprecedented technological advances have been made in healthcare in areas such as genomics, digital imaging and Health Information Systems, access to this information has been not been easy for both the healthcare provider and the patient themselves. Regulatory compliance and controls, information lock-in in proprietary Electronic Health Record systems and security concerns have made it difficult to share data across health care providers.

It's a simple fact that the better sales reps understand their prospects' intentions, preferences and pain points during calls, the more business they'll close. Each day, as your prospects interact with websites and social media platforms, their behavioral data profile is expanding. It's now possible to gain unprecedented insight into prospects' content preferences, product needs and budget. We hear a lot about how valuable Big Data is to sales and marketing teams. But data itself is only valuable when it's part of a bigger story, made visible in the right context.

Everyone talks about a cloud-first or mobile-first strategy. It's the trend du jour, and for good reason as these innovative technologies have revolutionized an industry and made savvy companies a lot of money. But consider for a minute what's emerging with the Age of Context and the Internet of Things. Devices, interfaces, everyday objects are becoming endowed with computing smarts. This is creating an unprecedented focus on the Application Programming Interface (API) as developers seek to connect these devices and interfaces to create new supporting services and hybrids. I call this trend the move toward an API-first business model and strategy.
We live in a world that requires us to compete on our differential use of time and information, yet only a fraction of information workers today have access to the analytical capabilities they need to make better decisions. Now, with the advent of a new generation of embedded business intelligence (BI) platforms, cloud developers are disrupting the world of analytics. They are using these new BI platforms to inject more intelligence into the applications business people use every day. As a result, data-driven decision-making is finally on track to become the rule, not the exception.

Increasingly, in a world of compressed times and distances, humans will be the inventors, designers and managers of digital systems and processes, rather than the operators. Operations will be measured in milliseconds, an inhumane speed where only the machines can deliver. Professor Paul Virilio, a philosopher of speed, urbanist and cultural theorist, wrote at length about the impact of speed on society. He wrote that speed compresses both time and distance. Where once it took a letter 6 months to get to the other side of the world, an email can now arrive in seconds. Today's near real-tim...

These days, change is the only constant. In order to adapt and thrive in an ever-advancing and sometimes chaotic workforce, companies must leverage intelligent tools to streamline operations. While we're only at the dawn of machine intelligence, using a workflow manager will benefit your company in both the short and long term. Think: reduced errors, improved efficiency and more empowered employees-and that's just the start. Here are five other reasons workflow automation is leading a revolution in the 9-5 world.
One of the core benefits of Java is the JVM, which is an out-of-the-box memory management. Essentially, we can create objects and the Java Garbage Collector will take care of allocating and freeing up memory for us. Nevertheless, memory leaks can still occur in Java applications. In this article, we're going to describe the most common memory leaks, understand their causes, and look at a few techniques to detect/avoid them. We're also going to use the Java YourKit profiler throughout the article, to analyze the state of our memory at runtime.
We have Continuous Integration and we have Continuous Deployment, but what’s continuous across all of what we do is people. Even when tasks are automated, someone wrote the automation. So, Jayne Groll evangelizes about Continuous Everyone. Jayne is the CEO of the DevOps Institute and the author of Agile Service Management Guide. She talked about Continuous Everyone at the 2016 All Day DevOps conference. She describes it as "about people, culture, and collaboration mapped into your value streams."
The renowned military strategist John Boyd taught that people and institutions collect favorite philosophies, strategies, theories and ideologies over a period of time, and then try to align the future to fit them. The problem with this is the future is rarely like the past, and trying to fit new data into old paradigms often forces us to perform irrational mental gymnastics, which leaves us farther from the truth.

In Michael Lewis’s 2013 best-seller Flash Boys, in which he takes a deep dive into the world of high-speed trading, he reveals how certain financial insiders had managed to game the system by reducing latency as much as possible in order to get an advantage over their competitors. Lewis showed how a fiberoptic connection that is just a millisecond or two faster than someone else’s can allow automated trading software to conduct transactions at the lowest possible prices. For the user (or machine) that had just the tiniest increase in latency, a stock price would appear on screen, but by the ti...
We get it. If your company isn’t up on blockchain, your future is doomed. At least, that’s the general vibe industry leaders are putting out – scrambling to understand and utilize a framework that is more frequently associated with cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. In other words, block chain is, generally, poorly understood. So, should your company stand back and let it mature, or wade into the fray and hope for the best?
We define Hybrid IT as a management approach in which organizations create a workload-centric and value-driven integrated technology stack that may include legacy infrastructure, web-scale architectures, private cloud implementations along with public cloud platforms ranging from Infrastructure-as-a-Service to Software-as-a-Service.
There are several reasons why businesses migrate their operations to the cloud. Scalability and price are among the most important factors determining this transition. Unlike legacy systems, cloud based businesses can scale on demand. The database and applications in the cloud are not rendered simply from one server located in your headquarters, but is instead distributed across several servers across the world. Such CDNs also bring about greater control in times of uncertainty. A database hack can be easily averted by shutting down the breached server and only rendering from servers that are ...
We all probably remember the movie (“Jurassic Park”), even if we don’t remember this exact scene: Dr. Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum is explaining Chaos Theory to Dr. Ellie Sattler, played by Laura Dern. Dr. Malcolm is explaining how random, seemingly negligible events can disrupt even the most carefully laid out plans. Dr. Ian Malcolm: [after the T-Rex failed to appear for the tour group]. “You see a Tyrannosaur doesn’t follow a set pattern or park schedules, the essence of chaos.”
API Security is complex! Vendors like Forum Systems, IBM, CA and Axway have invested almost 2 decades of engineering effort and significant capital in building API Security stacks to lockdown APIs. The API Security stack diagram shown below is a building block for rapidly locking down APIs. The four fundamental pillars of API Security - SSL, Identity, Content Validation and deployment architecture - are discussed in detail below.
"We provide IoT solutions. We provide the most compatible solutions for many applications. Our solutions are industry agnostic and also protocol agnostic," explained Richard Han, Head of Sales and Marketing and Engineering at Systena America, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
Fast-paced changes in the business landscape demand enterprises to rethink their existing business models and add innovative capabilities keeping in mind the new imperatives. One among them is the focus on Digital transformation. In the retail industry, growth is measured in terms of increased sales and value addition to existing products while keeping customer expectations in mind. This is where a digital focus is important to remain competitive.
SYS-CON Events announced today that DXWorldExpo has been named “Global Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 21st International Cloud Expo, which will take place on Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Digital Transformation is the key issue driving the global enterprise IT business. Digital Transformation is most prominent among Global 2000 enterprises and government institutions.
Digital technology innovations and advancements, and our adoption of them, have changed us. We are different consumers, employers and employees. Our expectations have increased. We have become mobile, impatient and demanding. We are global. We demand immediate, accurate and real-time responses. We use our technology not just for reading historic events and news, but also for predicting our future turn while navigating at 60 MPH.
In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Scott Davis, CTO of Embotics, discussed how automation can provide the dynamic management required to cost-effectively deliver microservices and container solutions at scale. He also discussed how flexible automation is the key to effectively bridging and seamlessly coordinating both IT and developer needs for component orchestration across disparate clouds – an increasingly important requirement at today’s multi-cloud enterprise.
Any startup has to have a clear go –to-market strategy from the beginning. Similarly, any data science project has to have a go to production strategy from its first days, so it could go beyond proof-of-concept. Machine learning and artificial intelligence in production would result in hundreds of training pipelines and machine learning models that are continuously revised by teams of data scientists and seamlessly connected with web applications for tenants and users.
In the cloud era, you as an IT professional are being forced to adopt new roles and take on new responsibilities you may not feel equipped to handle. Businesses are becoming increasingly hybrid, leaving you to manage, secure, monitor, and remediate technology on-premises and in the cloud. Of course, this comes with risks because it means you must manage mission-critical layers of application services across networks, systems, and services you neither own nor control. In fact, in many cases, you may not even have visibility into all the environments you’re responsible to ensure the performance ...
